About Schoolhouse Flowers

My name is Annie Thompson and I live in Skirling, a small village in the Scottish Borders on the border with South Lanarkshire.

In 2014 my love of gardening prompted me to start Schoolhouse Flowers and so, along with my long suffering husband and number one digger, I set to redesigning our garden and paddock.  In addition to the long borders in the garden we have a sheltered cutting garden with raised beds, a paddock with beds for both flowers and vegetables, a greenhouse which seems to have elastic sides and we have been lucky enough to be given the use of a polytunnel nearby.

You might think the climate in Scotland would not lend itself to growing flowers, and whilst it can be challenging, you would be amazed at what will grow here at 700ft above sea level.  Having to water is one problem we don’t have!  Our growing season is from April to October with the help of the polytunnel to gain a few precious weeks with early flowers and later in the year when the first frost hits.

The flowers are really the stars of the show but I also have an ever-increasing collection of shrubs and herbs which add that rustic, natural look that is becoming more and more popular.

I am not a formally trained florist.  My style is very much natural and has that just picked from the garden feel.  The flowers I grow really lend themselves to this style with seasonality being key, they are deliciously scented and quite different to those found on the High Street.
